One of the biggest things that people miss when they start eating a low carbohydrate diet is bread and pastas. The point behind eating foods that are lower in carbohydrates is to reduce your blood sugar and insulin production. Those blood sugar spikes can lead to weight gain and an inflammatory response in the body that increases the risk for specific diseases and medical conditions. Now, you can have breads that you either make at home or purchase at the store, that are not made with regular white or wheat flour. Instead, they are made with flours that are much lower in carbohydrates and reduce your insulin load. Unfortunately, some of the breads that are sold at the grocery store labeled low carbohydrate will increase your blood sugar as much as eating real bread.
The best way to find low carb bread that is really low carb is to look for independent testing or to make it yourself at home. Start with a low carbohydrate flour from a reputable company, like Bob’s Red Mill Low Carb Bread flour. Making the bread at home is also more cost effective. And, when combined with a bread machine, the process is simple, easy AND cost effective. Using a bread machine with the appropriate ingredients you can have fresh bread every day. Many low carbohydrate breads are also gluten free, or free of gluten products often associated with wheat. However, just because a product is gluten free doesn’t mean it is also low carbohydrate and visa versa.
